In the first UTW Spotlight On Mixtape, we put the spotlight one of the vanguards of Chinese Reggae, Lao Hei (老黑). This mixtape has 4 tracks from two of Lao Hei's bands, Yunnan Reggae (云南雷鬼) and The Pu'er Dub Allstars (云南民间的回响).
Lao Hei (far right) on stage with Kawa.
Lao Hei's home town, Pu'er is not only famous for the earthy Pu'er tea, but also famed as one of the main cultural centers of the Wa minority (also known as the Va or Kawa). The traditional music of the Wa ethnic group has a been a big influence in Lao Hei's music, and with the sometimes rhythmic always therapeutic sounds of traditional Wa music, its quite understandable to see how Lao Hei has looked to it as a large influence for his own music.
Here's 5 of my favorite tracks of Lao Hei's for his 3 bands: Kawa, The Pu'er Dub All-Stars and Yunnan Reggae.
